What is the “Book Closing Date?” It is the statewide deadline to register to vote OR to change your political party for any election if you are already registered. For first time voters in Florida, a completed voter registration form must be in the Supervisor of Elections’ office OR be postmarked by the book closing date. Remember: If you have relocated to a new address within Florida, register that address with the Supervisor of Elections’ office as soon as possible.
What is a “Closed Primary?” Florida is a closed primary election state. If you wish to vote in a partisan primary election, you must be a registered voter in the party for which the primary is being held, including a presidential preference primary election.
In other words: You must be a REGISTERED DEMOCRAT in order to vote for DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES in a primary. If you are currently registered as “No Party Affiliation (NPA),” you WILL NOT be able to vote in the primary. The deadline to register as Democrat for an upcoming election is 29 days before that election. You can also update your registration record at any time. If the registration deadline has passed, you can still submit an online application at any time and it will be processed for future elections.
